# HMRC Tax Return – 4: Fill In Your Return (Self-Employment Overview)

This section of your tax return is dedicated to your self-employment income and expenses. You'll need information from your MalgraBooks cloud spreadsheet or accounting records to complete this section.

The self-employment section is where you declare your business income and expenses to HMRC. This is typically the most important section for Slimming World consultants, as it covers your consultancy business.

We've split this guidance into three pages to make it easier to navigate. Each page corresponds to the different stages you'll encounter when completing the self-employment section on HMRC's system.

## How to Use This Guide

Work through each page in order as you complete your tax return. Have your MalgraBooks spreadsheet or accounting records ready before you start.

## Page 1: Business Setup & Details

This page covers the initial setup questions about your self-employment:

- VAT registration threshold
- Special circumstances that may apply to your business
- Business name and description
- Business address
- Start and cease dates

- Cash basis accounting

## Quick Tips for Slimming World Consultants

Most Slimming World consultants will:

- Answer **NO** to VAT registration (unless turnover exceeds £90,000)
- Select **"None apply"** for most special circumstances
- Use **cash basis accounting** (YES)
- Have a simple business structure with one business name
- Record expenses as a **single total value**
- Leave capital allowances and losses sections blank
- Pay Class 4 National Insurance (select "None apply" to exemptions)

## Before You Start

Make sure you have your final income and expense figures ready before starting this section. If you're using MalgraBooks, ensure all your transactions are entered and your accounts are up to date.

## Important Reminders

Due to the nature of the tax system, we cannot provide information covering every eventuality. With tax matters, everyone is different, and not all questions listed may appear on your return.

Where your circumstances are more complex than standard self-employment, seek professional assistance to complete your return.

## Need Help?
