Heading to the Conference?

If you’re heading to the conference in Birmingham this weekend, you may be permitted to claim for some expenses which you incur during the visit.

MalgraBooks Client? You can submit your conference expenses in your usual way through your Client Dashboard. Have a great weekend!

Ticket Price and Travel
As the conference is designed to impact your business, and grow your promotional base, you are permitted to claim the cost of the conference ticket as a general expense.

Travelling by train? You can also claim standard-class tickets (not first) or your mileage if you’re driving. Bus/Coach fares are also permitted, as are economy flights, where reasonable (i.e. HMRC wouldn’t expect you to fly when it’s cheaper to travel by train/car).

Food and Drink

Your meal and drink is included in your ticket price, however drinks which you have can be claimed.

Alcohol cannot be claimed.

‘Reasonable’ food and drink is acceptable, therefore soft drinks are okay, as would be breakfast the next day (if not included in your accommodation price). However once conference is over, HMRC would expect you to be heading back home.

You can claim for accommodation for the duration of the conference – i.e. just Saturday evening. However, accommodation is based on what would be reasonable – staying at a 5* resort could raise an issue.

Purchases in Birmingham

The city of Birmingham has many shops to offer, especially in the Bullring Shopping Centre – however only items where the use will be ‘wholly and exclusively’ used for business purposes is permitted.
