HMRC have confirmed that once again, records have been broken with the number of tax returns being submitted to them before the 31 January 2018 deadline.

10.7m people took to submitting their tax return this year, and a massive 9.9m used the online service as opposed to a paper return – meaning 92.5% of total returns were electronic.

On the last day of submission, 758,707 people completed their returns online before the deadline – the most popular time being between 4pm and 5pm, when 60,956 returns were submitted (1,010 per minute, or 17 per second!)

The last minute people who submitted between 11pm and 11:59pm on 31 January was 30,348.

However, just under 750,000 returns are still outstanding (745,588 to be exact), resulting in £100 fixed penalties due for each one.
